I have always been curious about how things work and drawn to problems that require patience, creativity, and persistence. My path into artificial intelligence and robotics wasn’t entirely linear. I began college studying business before discovering that mathematics fit the way I think much better. That eventually led me to computer science, research, and artificial intelligence.

Outside of my work, I love traveling and learning about the places I visit. When I travel, I try to visit every art museum I can in each city or town. I also have a particular interest in local history and enjoy historical society tours; historical murder tours are a must, doll museum….yes please, as are architectural tours and exploring a place through its food, coffee, and cocktail culture. For me, getting to know a place means understanding the people and traditions that shaped it.

Music is also an important part of my life; I play several instruments, poorly. I am a member of the International Space Orchestra’s choir, where people from across the space and scientific communities come together to perform music. I enjoy having a creative outlet that also brings me together with colleagues, something separate from our professional environment.

I value curiosity, independence, and continuous learning. Whether I’m working on a research problem or exploring a new city, I’m happiest when I’m discovering something I didn’t know before. Recently, someone explained the different traits in cucumbers that they selectively grow for different international markets; it was one of the most interesting conversations I’ve had in a while. Ask me about cucumbers!
